Becoming A Homeowner & Real Estate Investor: My Experience
I believe in teaching others from my own lived experience. My husband and I owned our first property, a condo in Calgary when I was 26, and he was 30. Little did we know how that this property would set us up for our next real estate investment. After a year of inner-city living, we were looking for a more outdoor-inspired lifestyle. Our mountain biking adventures introduced us to Bragg Creek, a small town on Calgary's outskirts tucked away in a beautiful pine forest. We made the bold move from a one-bedroom inner-city condo to a three-bedroom bungalow on a two-acre rural lot. After four incredible years on the acreage, we decided to sell. Within a couple of months, we sold, and our equity increased.
In pursuit of warmer weather and longer summers, we set our sights on the Okanagan and moved to Kelowna after a couple of years of renting in Calgary.
Renting a property reiterated the importance of homeownership and opened our eyes to the long term financial gain of investing in real estate. Like so many others, we were paying someone else's mortgage in less than desirable living conditions. Thankfully renting was temporary for us and strategic as it gave us freedom and time to line up careers in Kelowna.
To summarize our real estate investments in Alberta, we sold our condo for a profit and used it as a down payment for the acreage. Once our acreage's value increased, we managed to secure a cash sale and rendered another profit. I hope you are starting to see the pattern of equity accumulation in our story and how it has enabled us to own real estate and increase our financial wealth.
Today, we own a beautiful home in Kelowna. After exploring several real estate investment opportunities, we decided on investing in a property with a one-bedroom, fully self-contained legal suite with a separate entrance. With all-time low-interest rates, high demand for housing and a hot seller's market, our property value has already seen a significant increase in value in a short amount of time.
